Our Iraqi office in Basra reports that the many of the Ministries have just been agreed under the new Government in Iraq. The new structure is as follows:

On the 16^th June 2014, EAME’s MD presented a seminar on the Challenges and Opportunities of Working in Iraq at the ‘Opportunity Middle East’ conference organised by The Middle East Association (MEA) at the International Festival for Business 2014 in Liverpool.

The conference provided expert insight into the opportunities in Energy, Infrastructure and Finance for UK companies in the Middle East and North Africa.

With Iraq in the media spotlight at present, it was an ideal opportunity to discuss the problems EAME has encountered and overcome whilst undertaking project work in Iraq as well as to describe the benefits of such project work and potential future trends. The promoted significant interest at the following networking reception.

EAME are pleased to announce our membership of The Middle East Association (MEA). The MEA is the UK’s leading business forum for promoting trade and investment with the Middle East and North Africa. Formed in 1961 in the wake of Suez Canal crisis by around 50 of the UK’s leading banks and industrial companies, with the objective of ‘promoting and encouraging closer trade relationships with the Arab countries and to establish understanding between the peoples of those countries and the United Kingdom’.

EAME is pleased to announce appointment as professional environmental adviser to Zubair Terminal Company SAL (ZTC), based in Beirut and Dubai. It was established to develop and operate a greenfield terminal project at the port of Khor al-Zubair in Iraq, in association with its strategic partners, Peel Ports Group (Portia Management Services Ltd), Beirut Container Terminal Company (International Port Management) and its Iraqi partner, Basrah-Mas Company.

ZTC, together with its international and local partners, is planning to build, operate and transfer (BOT) the first new berths to be built in Iraq in over 30 years. This strategic addition to Iraq’s leading oil and gas port will provide three new multi-use berths, contribute significantly to the economic development of the Basra region, help to fulfill the Ministry of Transport port development plan, and attract major new shipping lines.

The project has also been reported in the Middle East Association (MEA) magazine.

EAME have recently been commissioned by a multinational oil and gas company to install a radar tide gauge system at an Iraqi port. This will replace a conventional tide gauge system which has been affected by the high rate of sedimentation in this part of the Middle East. EAME shall also undertake quarterly maintenance of the tide gauge to ensure that no issues arise, this shall be undertaken by fully trained local staff.

EAME is pleased to announce our latest recruit. Asaad is an in-country Iraqi environmental consultant fluent in both Arabic and English. A biology graduate, Asaad is a former employee of the Ministry of Health and is highly experienced in field and laboratory work. In addition, Asaad has been involved with NGOs, such as the International Research and Exchange Board, International Organisation of Migration, United Nations Office for Project Services and USAID/NDI since 2005. As a result, Asaad has extensive experience in NGO experience and administration.

To confirm our commitment to the regeneration and redevelopment of Iraq and Kurdistan, EAME are pleased to announce the opening of our Erbil office. Located close to Francois Mitterand Square, approximately 1km from the City Centre, the office is located off 60 Meter Street, one of the main routes from Erbil International Airport to the City Centre.

The office will be used to enable EAME to facilitate our clients’ needs both in Iraq and Kurdistan and is complementary to our operational base in Basra.

EAME have recently completed the first phase of a surface water resource study of southern Iraq for a multinational oil and gas company. The first phase involved the analysis of the surface water quality and flow assessment of the watercourses during the low flow season, further flow assessment works will be undertaken during the high flow season while the surface water quality will be assessed on a quarterly basis.

EAME have recently been commissioned to undertake a soil and sampling programme of the mud and flare pits of the Halfaya oilfield, Iraq. The programme has been designed to ensure so that any follow on remedial work will be planned appropriately. The Halfaya oilfield is located east of the city of Amarah and has a proven reserves of 4.1 billion barrels of oil.

EAME has recently participated in the Iraq Britain Business Council (IBBC) and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Trade Mission to Baghdad and Erbil that took place in November 2013. The IBBC facilitates business, trade, investment, human resources, training and transfer of technology and know-how into the Republic of Iraq, seeking to bring together Iraqi, British and international companies and public sector bodies through a joint platform identifying mutual interests and common goals.
